Discourse Markers

B2

Discourse markers like well, anyway, actually, by the way, and in fact guide the listener through your message. They open, soften, redirect, correct, or strengthen a point.

Start practice →

What you'll learn

  • Use well to open a response or soften what you say.
  • Use anyway to return to the main point and move on.
  • Use actually to correct or clarify information.
  • Use by the way to add a new side topic.
  • Use in fact to make a point stronger or more exact.
  • Set discourse markers off with commas when they interrupt the sentence.

Structure

marker, + clause

Use a comma when the marker comes first and comments on the whole message.

clause, + marker, + clause

A marker in the middle is parenthetical, so commas show the extra comment.

Build a sentence

Marker
Context
Actually,Lisa already sent the email

Actually, Lisa already sent the email.

This is the main job of actually: correction or clarification.

When to use

Opening a response

Use well when Anna asks a question and you need a natural, softer start: Well, I’m not sure that’s the best plan.

Returning after a detour

Use anyway after a short side point or problem: The train was late. Anyway, we got there on time.

Correcting information

Use actually when the real situation is different: I thought Tom was in Madrid. Actually, he’s in Lisbon.

Changing topic lightly

Use by the way to bring in a separate point: By the way, did Maria send the file yet?

Strengthening a point

Use in fact when the second statement is even stronger: The task wasn’t hard. In fact, it was easy.

In contrast

vs addition-connectors

Addition connectors add one more point to the same line of thought. By the way introduces a side topic instead of simple addition.

vs conclusion-connectors

Conclusion connectors close an argument. Anyway often closes a detour or moves the speaker forward, not the logic of the argument.

vs contrast-connectors

Contrast connectors show opposition between ideas. Actually often corrects an idea, and in fact strengthens one, so their job is different.

Common mistakes

Wrong
Well I think Lisa needs more time.
Correct
Well, I think Lisa needs more time.
At the start of a response, well is a separate discourse marker, so it takes a comma.
Wrong
Tom is tired. Anyway, he is hungry too.
Correct
Tom is tired. Also, he is hungry too.
Anyway does not simply add one more idea. It brings you back, closes a side point, or helps you move on.
Wrong
Actually, Maria opened the window and sat down.
Correct
Then Maria opened the window and sat down.
Actually signals correction, clarification, or surprise. It does not simply mean the next event in a story.
Wrong
We forgot the tickets. By the way, we went back home.
Correct
We forgot the tickets, so we went back home.
By the way introduces a side topic. It does not show the main result of a situation.
Wrong
In fact, did you see Anna on Friday?
Correct
By the way, did you see Anna on Friday?
In fact strengthens the current point. It does not open an unrelated side question.
Wrong
Tom is actually ready to leave.
Correct
Tom is, actually, ready to leave.
When actually comments on the whole statement in the middle, commas mark it as separate from the main clause.

Common misconceptions

All discourse markers mean roughly the same thing, so I can choose any one.

Each marker gives a different instruction to the listener: soften, return, correct, change topic, or strengthen. Swapping them changes the message flow.

These words are empty fillers, so punctuation and position do not matter.

They organize the message and guide the listener. Position and commas show whether the marker comments on the whole sentence or not.

Skills in this rule (6)

USE_WELL_TO_START_OR_SOFTENw4

Use well to start a response or make it softer

Use well before an answer, reaction, or opinion when you need a natural opening. It gives you a moment to respond and makes the tone less direct.

USE_ANYWAY_TO_RETURN_OR_CLOSEw5

Use anyway to return to the main point or move on

Use anyway after a side point, interruption, or problem when you want to continue the main topic. It helps you close the detour and bring the conversation back.

USE_ACTUALLY_TO_CORRECT_OR_CLARIFYw5

Use actually to correct, clarify, or give the real situation

Use actually when the first idea is wrong, incomplete, or surprising and you want to replace it with the true information. It often introduces a correction or a more accurate version.

USE_BY_THE_WAY_TO_CHANGE_TOPICw4

Use by the way to introduce a new side topic

Use by the way when you want to add a separate but relevant point. It signals a topic shift, not a result or correction.

USE_IN_FACT_TO_STRENGTHENw5

Use in fact to strengthen a statement or give stronger truth

Use in fact when you want to support a point with stronger or more exact information. It often makes the statement firmer than the first idea.

PUNCTUATE_PARENTHESESw4

Punctuate discourse markers as separate parenthesis

When these markers comment on the whole sentence, separate them with a comma or commas. The pause shows they organize the message, not the grammar inside the clause.
