Start practice →

What you'll learn

  • Choose do or does in present simple negatives and questions.
  • Use did for all subjects in past simple negatives and questions.
  • Keep the main verb in base form after do, does, and did.
  • Build negatives with do not, does not, and did not.
  • Build yes/no questions by moving the helper verb to the front.
  • Answer with short forms like Yes, I do. or No, they didn't.

Structure

subject + do/does + not + base verb

Use do with I/you/we/they and does with he/she/it. The main verb stays in base form.

Do/Does + subject + base verb + ?

Start the yes/no question with Do or Does. The main verb stays bare.

subject + did + not + base verb

Use did not for all subjects in the past. The main verb does not change to past form.

Did + subject + base verb + ?

Did works with all subjects. Put it first and keep the main verb in base form.

Yes, subject + do/does/did. / No, subject + don't/doesn't/didn't.

Repeat the helper verb from the question. Do not add the main verb in a short answer.

Common mistakes

Wrong
You like coffee?
Correct
Do you like coffee?
Present simple yes/no questions need do or does at the front.
Wrong
He do like tea?
Correct
Does he like tea?
With he, she, and it, use does, not do.
Wrong
She doesn't works on Fridays.
Correct
She doesn't work on Fridays.
After does, the main verb must stay in base form.
Wrong
Did Tom went home?
Correct
Did Tom go home?
Did already marks the past, so the main verb returns to base form.
Wrong
She did go home?
Correct
Did she go home?
In a yes/no question, the helper verb goes before the subject.

Common misconceptions

After did, the main verb should also be in the past form.

Only did shows the past here. The main verb stays in base form: Did she go? not Did she went?

A short answer needs the full main verb.

Short answers use the helper verb only: Yes, he does. No, they didn't.

Skills in this rule (7)

USE_DO_DOES_IN_PRESENTw5

Use do or does for present simple negatives and questions

Use do with I, you, we, they and does with he, she, it. This helper verb builds the negative and the yes/no question in the present.

USE_DID_IN_PASTw5

Use did for past simple negatives and questions

Use did for all subjects in past simple negatives and yes/no questions. The helper verb carries the past meaning.

KEEP_MAIN_VERB_BASEw5

Keep the main verb in base form after do, does, and did

After do, does, or did, use the base verb: work, go, like. Do not add -s or use the past form on the main verb.

BUILD_NEGATIVES_WITH_NOTw4

Build negatives with do not, does not, and did not

Put not after do, does, or did to make the sentence negative. The main verb stays in base form after the helper verb.

BUILD_YES_NO_QUESTIONSw5

Build yes/no questions with do, does, and did

Start the question with do, does, or did, then add the subject and the base verb. Use this pattern for present and past yes/no questions.

SHORT_ANSWERS_WITH_DOw3

Answer yes/no questions with short answers

Use the same helper verb in the short answer: Yes, I do. No, he doesn't. Yes, they did. No, she didn't.

PICK_TIME_MARKERSw3

Use present and past time markers to choose the helper verb

Markers like every day point to do or does; markers like yesterday or last night point to did. The marker helps you choose present or past.
