What you'll learn

  • Build affirmative sentences with need to + base verb.
  • Build negatives with don't need to and doesn't need to.
  • Ask yes/no questions with Do/Does ... need to ... ?
  • Recognize needn't as a shorter way to say no necessity.
  • Understand that don't need to means optional, not forbidden.

Structure

subject + need to + base verb

Use need to before the base verb in affirmative sentences.

subject + do/does + not + need to + base verb

Use do not need to or does not need to for no necessity. After does, need stays bare.

Do/Does + subject + need to + base verb + ?

Start the question with do or does. Need does not take -s after does.

subject + needn't + base verb

Needn't is a shorter negative form. Do not add to after needn't.

Build a sentence

Subject
Verb
Sheneeds to call

She needs to call Tom today.

In the affirmative, she needs to takes -s.

When to use

Tasks and duties

Use need to for actions required in daily situations and work tasks. Maria needs to send the report today.

Practical necessity

Use it when the situation makes something necessary. Tom needs to buy batteries because the remote is dead.

No necessity

Use don't need to or needn't when the action is optional. Lisa doesn't need to come early tomorrow.

In contrast

vs have-to-external-obligation

Need to and have to both express necessity. Need to often focuses on what is necessary in the situation; have to often sounds more like an outside requirement.

Common mistakes

Wrong
I need call Anna tonight.
Correct
I need to call Anna tonight.
After need in this pattern, use to before the main verb.
Wrong
She need not to leave now.
Correct
She does not need to leave now.
For this structure, make the negative with does not need to. Keep to before the main verb.
Wrong
He doesn't needs to hurry.
Correct
He doesn't need to hurry.
After doesn't, the verb stays in the base form: need, not needs.
Wrong
Need you to pay now?
Correct
Do you need to pay now?
Yes/no questions with need to take do or does at the front.
Wrong
You needn't to bring food.
Correct
You needn't bring food.
After needn't, use the base verb directly. Do not add to.

Common misconceptions

If I say you don't need to do it, I mean you must not do it.

Don't need to means there is no necessity. The action is optional, not forbidden.

Needn't means a stronger negative than don't need to.

Both forms express no necessity. Needn't is mainly a shorter form.
